Yes, there are stereotypes in the film - the impoverished Indians, the imperious British stiff upper lipped white woman, but such characters do exist - isn't that the whole point of stereotypes?
If you haven't already seen it: go on and buy the DVD, you won't regret it. Seven Tickets to India, and Your Reservations for an Adventure!Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 13, 2015 British pensioners on a tight budget move to a retirement home in india; their adventures there giving them a new lease on life.
From The Orlando Weekly, May 10, 2012 “We have a saying in India: Everything will be all right in the end. Seriously, I did. What was its point?'. They have to cope with its shortcomings, a culture and people they don't know, and the different people within their group. As the film gets going, character and plot are given more time to work, and the magic takes hold. Please try againSorry, we failed to record your vote. The acting, with this fabulous cast assembled, is amazing. A Joy To Watch! Sometimes a film comes along that is like a wake up call when all you've encountered for what seems like ever, is garbled, quickly turned out, with performances that make you wish all the characters were killed off in the first 5 minutes, so you could go home!.
The best part was that the unfolding of people's stories, needs, and how it all came together. Please try againSorry, we failed to record your vote. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. There's someone we all know in these characters. The first time I watched this "first" version of Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, I thought it a bad first attempt and terribly depressing compared to the 2nd Best Exotic. There were moments of great sadness, (Tom Wilkinson's character - I won't spoil it for others), and moments that were genuinely funny (Lots of them!). If you've already seen it and, like me, want to have a copy to view whenever you're in the mood for it or need a bit of sunshine and fluffy escapism - likewise.
I don't know the book, so I have to judge this as a film. As Sonny's wedding day nears, he struggles to open a second hotel for the elderly, and his residents are forced to reckon with their own love lives. Ah sure how can you say anything bad about this with such a collection of National Treasures ne'er before assembled in such an exotic location to provide us all with effortless oh-so-British entertainment. There was, however, one scene that almost made me choke with laughter (Don't read past this point, if you want to be surprised!) I was eager to see the film, having previously read and thoroughly enjoyed the book of the same name - the plot of the book is about a Indian doctor living and working in Britain, who has the bright idea to get rid of his annoying British father in law by persuading his dodgy rich Indian cousin to open a residential home for unwanted elderly British people in India. Ronald Pickup's character, a lonely old man in his seventies who doesn't want to give up on life and love, has a date with an attractive older woman he has met at a rather posh club with its roots dating back to the days of The Raj. Things that really could have gone wrong - like Judi Dench instructing young indians how to take calls in a call centre- come off brilliantly. I have a problem with a certain sort of British film, and this is one such. 2015 PG 2h 2m Comedies. It is true that the actors did largely play to type. Although the film is very different from the book in many ways (which was a bit disappointing), I was glad to see that most of the characters were kept intact, plus the exotic setting of a home for the elderly in India.
They don't look forward to their retirement years in England, in tiny apartments and with mechanized systems dealing with them. Rather than trying to avoid the cliché's everyone associates with people entering their twilight years and with the Indian sub-continent, Madden jumps in with both feet, crams them in and reinforces them. That's what makes it such a joy! I am sure that everybody will love this film as much as we did! Fabulous story - beautiful progress from pathos of a long-ago friendship/romance that one character is trying to resolve, interwoven with other connections young and old and the beauty and comedy of the indian setting. Think of it as several Hallmark of Lifeline movies all going on at the same time. It captures life at the wrong end, lays it bare and puts it all out there before neatly sewing it all back together again. Judi Dench, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy) haben keine Lust auf billige Die britischen Kino-Stars Judi Dench, Bill Nighy und Maggie Smith stranden im "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" im indischen Jaipur. I bought this as a companion to The Second Best Exotic, so that I could watch them in order. There's no bad language, no acerbic social commentary and no moralistic message; it's just a very pleasant, heart-warming, life affirming, simple tale well told.
