So why wouldn’t you try and do something new?“On a personal level my grandmother, who was white, and my auntie Anna, who was Afro-Caribbean, were a mixed race variety act called Two Shades in 1930s Manchester.“Creating the characters of Lois and Connie was partly a desire to celebrate them and they became a starting point for telling hidden stories of diversity.“During the war Two Shades had huge success because a lot of entertainers had been posted overseas and their story seemed an organic and natural place to start.”The drama is set in 1939 at the outbreak of war when Adolf Hitler invades Poland, plunging Europe into conflict.World of Fire gives a unique spin on the Second World War with settings including Warsaw, Manchester, Berlin, Paris and right to the frontline with the beaches of Dunkirk.The series will chart the first year of the war from multiple viewpoints as the Nazi launch their plans for global domination and the world reacts.Bowker said of the settings: “Each city, be it Manchester, Paris, Berlin and Warsaw, had a slightly different, colour palette and design.“There’s a series of almost subliminal visual clues that are bedded in.“One of the huge challenges of the drama is that the audiences retain in their head each family and where we are, so when we go from one story to another we’re not disorientated and lost.”Bowker said production designer Paul Spriggs created settings with a shorthand that would immediately be recognisable and place the audience in that particular city.He added that viewers wouldn’t “feel cheated” by the settings with each city having a unique tone and feel.World on Fire was filmed in 2018 with some locations including Manchester, Paris and Prague in the Czech Republic.The series depicts wartime Warsaw in Poland before it was bombed, which required the crew to go to a town which doubled up as the city that has since been rebuilt and transformed.Actress Julia Brown praised the production values, saying of the series: “World on Fire is so different to every production that I’ve been on before, and the fact that every department has, to the finest detail, brought the 1930s to life has been wonderful.“When I am performing on stage, and the band around me are all in 1930s costumes with the room decked to the nines it’s so easy to feel like you were there.” See today's front and back pages, download the newspaper,
