Economic theory, she says, “needs to be rewritten” — and Raworth has tried, in a book called Doughnut Economics. Over all, don't read it unless you have to.complete bollocks, un-referenced 'studies' being used to back up their meandering and un thought out claims. The best selling book Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything written by Steven D.Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner was a revelation when it was written.
The most startling and thought-provoking example is definitely the unexpected reduction in US urban crime that occurred towards the end of the 20th century.
The demonstration of critical thinking is good on a superficial level. I did, however, learn from this book. A quick Google search yields rebuttals from true experts in the various fields that effectively point out flaws in their quotes, facts, and logic. Levitt was chosen as one of Time Magazine's "100 People Who Shape Our World" in 2006.“Morality, it could be argued, represents the way that people would like the world to work, wheareas economics represents how it actually does work.” I enjoyed Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner’s Freakonomics: A Rogue Economist Explores the Hidden Side of Everything; however, I’m not yet sure if it is simply entertaining or is in any way instructive. They usually begin with a mountain of data and a simple question. Freakonomics is an interesting look at a wide variety of phenomenon, using the statistical analysis of economics to prove or disprove the conventional wisdom. To create our lis...Which is more dangerous, a gun or a swimming pool? saving…. It still amazes me that the way to reduce crime seems to be the legalization of abortion. Finally, there are books like Freakonomics that reproduce academic papers in a popular form. Sad, but true.I found this audiobook unbearable. Levitt and Dubner and probably the kind of smart arse nerds who snigger at you because you don't understand linux but sneer at you because you've actually spoken to a woman.
Actually the author puts it best himself: Everything I hate about popular science - alternating between over-simplified, patronising, naive or simply annoying, but worst of all, blatantly refusing to take account of the political and social implications of its findings, and being proud of it.I won't deny that this is a very interesting, compelling and thought-provoking book. A quick Google search yields rebuttals from true expeThis book is a good example of garbage in, garbage out. Aisle upon aisle of fresh produce, cheap meat, and sugary cereal — a delicious embodiment of free-market capitalism, right?
I did not expect that, but it does make quite a lot of sense and I’m all for women having control over their own bodies and futures, of course. October 17th 2006 The story sounds at least partially made up. commissioner who’s been warning of a pandemic for years; and an economist who thinks Covid-19 may finally change how diseases are cured. Also: how does a cook become a chef? Interesting enough, but the exponential amount of data made it hard to remember what the initial claims of the economist were instead of reinforcing them, strangely! Why do drug dealers still live with their moms? Could these two tossers be any more smarmy and self indulgent? Even for someone like me whose general response to economics is *snore*. But that it where the good stuff ends. What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common? I use statistical methods a fair amount in my own work, so I found it particularly interesting. Joined by acclaimed author and podcast host Stephen J. Dubner, Levitt presents a brilliant—and brilliantly entertaining—account of how incentives of the most hidden sort drive behavior in ways that turn conventional wisdom on its head.Steven D. Levitt, a professor of economics at the University of Chicago, was awarded the John Bates Clark Medal, given to the most influential American economist under forty. Published Freakonomics is a groundbreaking collaboration between Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner, an award-winning author and journalist. Even for someone like me whose general response to economics is *snore*. I use statistical methods a fair amount in my own work, so I found it particularly interesting. Pretty interesting how much he dislikes criminologists but then (if I remember correctly), only mentions the same one or two names over and over when giving examples of criminologists that had agendas/tricked the public. In the eight years since its publication, the book has spawned a sequel and even a documentary.
Sad, but true. The most interesting part of this book was the introduction. Washington Post Book World. The author consistently ignores the correlation-causation warning.
